(SUMMIT) FOSSILS AND DINOSAUR BONES: How to Create a Summer Camp Curriculum to Die For!

Overwhelmed by all the lesson plans you could use for your summer camp? Join us today for a very special episode from our Full by Fall summit, where DeAnn Jones will talk all about: “Fossils and Dinosaur Bones: How to Create a Summer Camp Curriculum to Die For!”

Don’t limit yourself from all the fun summer camp theme possibilities you can use! Even if you are in an online preschool setting, you can make each activity more interactive and engaging.

    Deanne and Dinosaur Bones

Starting your own preschool means doing a long list of tasks, but conceptualizing a summer camp theme is especially straining! DeAnne emphasizes how important it is to find a particular niche so everything else in the process becomes more manageable.

In her case, she had a preschooler who was crazy about dinosaurs that the child had two birthdays that were themed with it. DeAnne knew that the child would be thrilled to have dinosaurs as a theme for a class. But in the creative curriculum, we cannot go for topics that no longer exist around the child in the present, and we all know dinosaurs have said goodbye ages ago.

So she thought – dinosaur bones! It came out as a success not only for that child but for every pupil who joined her summer camps ever since. Your path to finding the perfect summer camp theme may sound different, but ensuring you get that particular niche will be the secret to the best summer camp you’ll ever have!

    Summer Camp Themes Are Endless!

When searching for summer camp themes, don’t be overwhelmed with ideas, or you’ll end up with over twenty ideas and zero decisions. It’s not about squeezing creativity but about knowing the right strategy!

DeAnne advises that internet search is a shortcut to finding so many fun themes to play around with. Try to incorporate your own ideas into what is already available on the web. You’ll find this pattern much smoother and less time-consuming than doing all the planning with your own concepts.

    On Defining Goals and Outcomes

Some parents leave their children in daycare just because they need to have their children entertained or preoccupied. But some parents expect results of learning. DeAnne tells us that it is essential to define where your focus falls: fun or learning?

Of course, the two should be able to go hand in hand in the process. But make sure you are clear with this, especially to the parents! If you would rather be an avenue for the children to express themselves better emotionally and socially, there’s nothing wrong with that.

If you choose to give actual learning outcomes, you should define this earlier, so your plans actually go along with that expected outcome.
